Customization

Customization is a large game mechanic in A Hat in Time, which allows the player to change parts of the game's aesthetic through Flairs, Dyes, Costumes, and Music.

During Hat Kid's adventure, she can unlock customizations by exchanging Rift Tokens in the Orb Machine hidden behind the barrels in the Main room of Hat Kid's Spaceship, or by completing each Time Rift for the first time. Customization options include Hat Flairs to change the appearance of certain Hats, palettes that change the colors for Hat Kid's clothing/hair, and remixes to change the music in certain levels/areas.

As of the Nyakuza Metro DLC, the number of Customizations acquirable trough The Roulette is a total of 35. Listed:

Modding Update Flairs

The modding update added some new flairs to a few of the hats. While originally an update for just the PC version of the game, these flairs can be found on both PC and console versions of the game

Vanessa's Curse Hat Flairs

These hats are added with Vanessa's Curse (DLC) and can be bought from Snatcher and the Badge Seller in the lobby. With Snatcher, only a certain amount of crowns needs to be met without having to actually spending it on Snatcher.

This is made obvious by the fact that Nightmargin is the online name of the main artist, character designer, musician, and co-writer of OneShot.

These color palettes are added with DLC. While only Cardboard is added with Seal the Deal (DLC), the rest are added with Nyakuza Metro (DLC) and Vanessa's Curse (DLC). None of these dyes are found in the Roulette, and instead are bought from NPCs or rewards for completing certain challenges.

Fortress			Bought from a cat in Yellow Overpass Station next to the blue ticket gate for 25 pons. This Dye, alongside the Battlements dye, is based off of Team Fortress 2, and its own paint system for its various cosmetics. The reds and oranges are likely in reference to that game's RED team.
Battlements			Bought from a cat in Yellow Overpass Station next to the blue ticket gate for 75 pons. This Dye, alongside the Fortress dye, is based off of Team Fortress 2, and its own paint system for its various cosmetics. The blues and yellows are likely in reference to that game's BLU team.

Costumes

The Seal the Deal DLC also adds costumes for Hat Kid to wear. To unlock these costumes, however, she must complete several of the Snatcher's challenges. Nyakuza Metro also adds some more costumes that can be bought from the cats found around the metro.

Also makes Hat Kid close her eyes.

Remixes

Changes the music played in certain levels and areas. They can be adjusted by the Wowl Band, whom are found on the Spaceship once the player has collected their first remix.

Trivia

• On launch, the Time Stop Hat had no flairs.

• The Brewing Hat is the only hat to have only one Flair outside of DLC.

• A contest was held on Kickstarter to decide on a design for the Backer exclusive hat. The winning design ended up being unused, but a model for it still remains in the game's files.

• When Hat Kid transforms into an ice statue via the Ice Hat's ability, the Ice Hat will remain in its normal appearance, regardless if any hat flair for the Ice Hat is equipped (with the exception of the 2 Ice Hats obtainable from Vanessa's Curse).

• Despite adding in many new Dyes, Flairs and Costumes, the Nyakuza Metro DLC has all of its customization options purchased exclusively through its many Gang Sellers, with none being featured in the Roulette.

• The original release on the Xbox and Playstation versions had a glitch which stopped the Completionist's Hat from spawning. As of the Nyakuza Metro DLC, that glitch has been fixed.

• The Completionist Kid's Hat is the only hat flair to have a special ability: When worn, previously collected Green Pons will be coloured white on one half, as opposed to the regular green.
