Mafia Goons are enemies in A Hat in Time, serving as the primary enemy type in Chapter 1: Mafia Town. They act underneath the order of their leader, the Mafia Boss of Cooks.

Appearance

Mafia Goons are very large and muscular in stature, standing at twice the size of Hat Kid. Mafia Goons have thick, dark eyebrows, small mustaches, and are bald. The main uniform of the Mafia is composed of a blue pinstripe suit and pants, a white undershirt with a red tie and an apron.

There are some variations of this outfit, such as the construction Mafia who wear yellow hardhats, those that work by the docks who wear small sailor's caps, and the ones working in the black market who wear there are two Mafia that wear black suits with red caps.

Personality

The Goons are brutish, unintelligent, and ill-tempered towards anyone and anything. They often act out violently as to extort non-Mafia residences, and have very limited comprehension to any problems that arise. They are also shown to be rather prideful and vain, describing their actions to be good and often creating large displays of vanity in their usage of giant gold statues in their image. When they're not acting excessively violent, some Mafia Goons can be found sleeping or relaxing on the island they inhabit.

Mafia show to have a quite limited ability to cook, often impressed about their cooking far more than they should be, the quality of Mafia cooking being often described as poor or even inedible. Cooking Cat replaces the Mafia's cooking before anybody can consume it, however.

As seen in She Came from Outer Space, virtually all Mafia can be rather easily scared when they can't use raw power to brute force something. This is to the extent that if they see Hat Kid drenched in mud they will flee in terror, assuming she's a "slimy alien" of some kind.

Role

As the main antagonists of Chapter 1, they serve as both the primary enemies and residence of the area. As seen in the Mafia's Grand Voyage storybook, Mafia Town wasn't always "Mafia Town", but became this way once the Mafia colonized the island.

NPCs

Hat Kid can talk to most of the Goons in Mafia Town, who will have miscellaneous flavor text often regardless of the act. Unlike other NPCs in A Hat in Time, the Mafia Goons can be hurt and defeated even if they are initially passive, where they will promptly drop any conversational prompts and begin combat. They will also refuse to talk to Hat Kid if she is covered in mud, instead running away from her in fear, but conversation can be initiated as normal once she is clean.

However, some Mafia Goons are invulnerable to attacks of any kind. This includes Mafia Goons that are resting, being burnt in lava during Heating Up Mafia Town, and those waiting in line during The Finale.

Enemies

Although most Mafia Goons are passive, being friendly unless attacked first, certain Mafia Goons will attack the player first as any other enemy would. Mafia Goons are slow and plodding in their attacks, and they can perform 2 basic attacks: Punching after a short wind-up, and a tackle that they have to recover from afterwards. To compensate for this, Mafia Goons can tank more damage than other minor enemies, able to withstand four hits before being defeated.

If a Mafia Goon is hit 3 times with the Umbrella, he will begin to glow red and emit red waves from his body, exclaiming that he's figured out Hat Kid's attack pattern. From here, the Mafia Goon will be immune to regular hits from the Umbrella until he is hit with any other attack, such as the homing attack, Brewing Hat concoctions, or even jumping on his head.

Unique Mafia Goon types also exits throughout A Hat in Time which do not fit the above groups. There are several instances where Mafia Goons will be invulnerable, where they will bait the player into playing a game of Pattycake, where the Mafia Goon will punch Hat Kid across the map, dealing one hit of damage. Some Mafia Goons can also be seen leaning against a wall, usually in the middle of a path, sticking out their leg to trip Hat Kid if she gets too close. An instance of this can be seen in the Death Wish She Speedran from Outer Space, where a Goon will attempt to trip you and waste some time.

Another is located at Queen Vanessa's Manor, where he can be found hiding in the bedroom's dresser alongside Hat Kid, shaking and crying in fear. After completing the floor's balloon puzzle, a loud clatter can be heard from the other room, and the dresser will be found collapsed with him frozen inside.

Trivia

  • Mafia Goons are the only non-major characters featured on the game's logo.
  • Mafia Goons had a different face texture in earlier game builds, with smaller and much more square eyes. This model was used up until a few weeks before release, and can still be seen in a few promotional screenshots and footage.
  • During the game's Kickstarter campaign, concept art of alternate Mafia Goon designs for added variety were teased but ultimately never used. Some variations would've been a Rapper, a Milkman, a Drunkard, a Courier, Police, and Vendors, some of which were partially implemented in earlier builds of the game, but never finished.[1]
  • In earlier builds of the game, when Hat Kid killed a Mafia Goon, they would drop ties; either red or rarely gold. These were to be exchanged for other goods - such as Relics or Badge Parts, which Hat Kid would have to collect and combine into a complete badge - with a Mafia Goon in the marketplace, but this was later scrapped.[1][2]
